Randy Pitchford Confirms Borderlands 4 is in the Works

The new installment of the Borderlands series is already in development. This was confirmed by Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Randy Pitchford from Gearbox confirmed that the team is working on a new installment of the Borderlands series.

After the huge success of the third installment of Borderlands (over 10 million copies of the game sold by May 2020), it should come as no surprise that Gearbox Software has plans to continue working on the franchise. For some time now, the Internet has been abuzz with rumors about new titles from this brand. Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, decided to address them.

"I am told of rumors that Gearbox is "assisting" or "co-developing" another Borderlands game (or a new spin-off game). These rumors are NOT accurate. Gearbox is lead dev of any future games in the Borderlands franchise (or any Borderlands adjacent games) with no co-development."

Continuing the thread, Pitchford revealed that the team is currently working on something big connected with the Borderlands IP.

"More: We are definitely working on some amazing stuff that, I hope, will surprise and delight you. Plug: if anyone out there has Skills-To-Pay-Bills and wants to get in on some Borderlands action, we're working on the big one :)"

Based on these two posts on Twitter, it's hard to draw clear conclusions. However, it would not be an exaggeration if we assume that Borderlands 4 is in the early stages of developments. At this point, we know that the studio is working on support for Borderlands 3, which recently received an expansion titled Director's Cut.
