The unique adventure game Return of the Obra Dinn made its debut in 2018. Its unconventional way of conveying the story was supposed to leave players with ample room to explore the secrets hidden in plain sight. Today, on the 5th anniversary of its release, its creator decided to share additional trivia.

Lucas Pope, who previously became famous as the creator of the independent gem Papers, Please, in a series of tweets shared materials that did not ultimately make it into Return of the Obra Dinn. NOTE: although after so many years it is hard to talk about spoilers here, we warn that the uploaded content can be considered as such.

Return of the Obra Dinn from the unknown side

The first honorable mention, according to Lucas, goes to "oceanic friend," which, in the game's minimalist graphic style, appears to us as a disturbing outline of a giant man-crab, trying to board the ship. Knowing the ironic approach of the designer, we can assume that this creature would not be warmly disposed to the crew...

As part of the review of unused graphics, Lucas was also said to have recalled all the mechanics that were abandoned during the creation of Return of the Obra Dinn.

The game was to feature a system of clues represented by simple icons, but creating sufficiently meaningful metaphors was to be a time-consuming and unnecessary challenge.

In addition to these two captivating mentions, Lucas posted a recommendation of two artists creating graphics and music inspired by Return of the Obra Dinn.

Lucas acknowledged that such a form of commemorating the important anniversary of the game was not his dream, but he is said to be busy at the moment creating his next game. I think fans of his work will undoubtedly accept such an explanation.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to get to know Return of the Obra Dinn - a voyage through 19th-century sea waters with a lost, or rather, decimated crew - now is the right time to do so. To celebrate the anniversary of its debut, the game is currently available 50% off on Steam. You can also find it on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
