Season is the Unexpected Winner of State of Play

Yesterday's State of Play brought a few surprises, such as the unexpected announcement of Resident Evil 4 Remake. Not to diminish the highly anticipated Capcom title, however, the black horse of the PlayStation show turns out to be a completely different game - Season: A Letter to the Future.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  1. During yesterday's State of Play, another trailer for Season: A Letter to the Future was shown. The game features an interesting concept, but it should also appeal to fans of Life is Strange.
  2. The launch is announced for this fall, and the title will be released on PC, PS4 and PS5.

Season: A Letter to the Future was announced at The Game Awards in December 2020. Already then, the game of the Canadian studio Scavengers, which you may associate with e.g. Darwin Project, has attracted the attention of the players. Atmospheric audiovisuals are reminiscent of a mix of Life is Strange and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while retaining its own unique character. Thanks to further details we learned at Sony's show along with a new trailer, we can deduce that the game has an interesting concept and can do a lot of work in its niche.

Season: A Letter to the Future is a love letter to life

The core of the game is the journey of the main character, Estelle, who, in the face of the approaching "change", (it's not necessarily a disaster or the typical end of the world, it has more of a metaphorical overtone) leaves her family village in the mountains, to use a camera and a microphone to capture the last moments of a familiar, if somewhat alien world.

Gameplay in Season: a Letter to the Future will be based on exploration, recording and photography, but there will also be human interactions. With a camera and microphone we will be able to capture everything we see and hear. At any moment Estelle can jump off her bike and reach into her backpack, where she keeps various tools for recording sounds and music, the voices of the elderly, photographing art and architecture, disappearing religious practices or other traces of seasons long past. All of this is meant to help us - and Estelle - capture the culture, history, and even ecology of this bizarre world in which the seasons are a kind of period, an inexorably passing era, all tied together by our handy journal.

An important aspect of Season: A Letter to the Future is also about spending time with other people, helping them to survive, but also to find ways to live with the changes that are coming. The recordings we show them are meant to influence the story progress, which will also include choices. Throughout her journey, Estelle wants to know and understand the world around her, which she does for herself and for whoever reads her journal.

Season: A Letter to the Future will be released in fall 2022 on PC (Steam and Epic), PS4 and PS5. On Sony's newest console, the game will also take advantage of the DualSense controller features.
