Server monetization introduced to DayZ

Since December 1st DayZ private servers owners can ask for an admission fee and accept donations from players. Bohemia Interactive is currently doing a test run of the monetization system to see how it works in their zombie-themed MMO.

Bohemia Interactive introduced server monetization system to DayZ, similar to the one that has been used in Arma III since February 2015. This means that owners of DayZ private shard servers, specifically approved by Bohemia Interactive, are allowed to accept donations and limit access to only paying players. Besides, some cosmetic items can be sold or given out to donors, but this may not be gameplay-affecting content. Of course, these rules only apply to private shards – public hives are still free. Visit Bohemia Interactive’s official website for more details.

Bohemia Interactive decided for an early test of server monetization system in DayZ.

This decision rouse some controversies among the playing community. Let alone the scary-looking “server monetization” term, this may be a surprise to see a system like this in a game in its Alpha build, especially when it offers no mod support (not yet at least). Besides, those who have already been playing on a private shard that now asks for an admission fee may feel forced to pay in order to continue playing with their character (since it’s impossible to migrate characters between shards). Check out a Reddit discussion on this topic.

It’s noteworthy that the system is currently being tested and will run until May 31st 2016. Then, Bohemia Interactive will analyze how it affects the community and decide whether and how it should be renewed.
