Taika Waititi Warns That His Star Wars Movie Will 'Piss Off a Lot People'
Taika Waititi has been working on a Star Wars movie for several years now. We finally learned something new about it.
The Star Wars universe continues to expand with new titles. Quite recently we received Obi-Wan or Andor, and there are already more productions on the horizon. One of them is the project of Taika Waititi, who is not convinced the reception of his work will be positive. What does the director really have in mind?
Waititi exchanged superheroes for Jedi masters
The New Zealand actor and director is a figure we may associate with Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok or the excellent horror and mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. For the former, the filmmaker received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Marvel, vampires, pirates - we're dealing with a really wide range of characters here, and we've known for some time that the 48-year-old will tackle work with Jedi masters.
Very little is known about the Star Wars project directed by Taika Waititi. The movie has yet to receive an official title or release date. George Lucas himself will be involved in the creative process, as well as talented screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Unfortunately, to be able to work on such a huge project, the New Zealander had to let go of some assignments. One of them turned out to be an engagement in another Marvel production, which was to be a continuation of Thor Odinson's adventures.
The mid-September we saw premiere of the sports comedy Next Goal Wins, directed by Waititi. In an interview with Variety, he was asked specifically about Star Wars, but his answer surprised and perhaps even enraged fans of the franchise. As he stated, the movie will anger the viewers. In earlier statements, the artist mentioned that his Star Wars will live its own life, so that the script will arise naturally. The creator does not want to deviate from what we already know, however, he does not rule out introducing novelties to the universe.
"It will be... [dramatic pause] a Taika Waititi movie. It will piss people off," the director said.
Waitit's fans are well aware of his school of filmmaking. There's no shortage of controversy, appropriate humor, as well as high-caliber craftsmanship. Will the upcoming Waititi Star Wars turn out to be controversial and too far from what we have already dealt with? One thing we know for sure - if Star Wars directed by the New Zealander will see the light of day, we will witness quite a revolution.
