Fighting Games are Niche? Not Tekken

Tekken 7 is breaking sales records, having knocked out the third and fifth installment of the series. This is an doubtless success, especially in such a niche genre as fighiting games.

As a rule, in rankings of the most popular video game genres fighting games, do not rank excessively high. Bandai Namco has a different opinion on the subject. To confirm it, it boasts the total sales results of one of its most important brands.

Tekken with multi-million community of devoted fans

The statistics were shared by Katsuhiro Harada on Twitter. The company's director announced that Tekken 7 has found 10 million buyers on all platforms (PC, PS4 and Xbox One). The title was released in 2017 and immediately became a hit. in 2018 Harada reported sales of 3 million units, and in 2021, he boasted 7 million copies. According to an analysis from June Tekken 7 is the best-selling game in the series.

Harada also revealed, that the total sales of the entire Tekken series has exceeded 54 million units. According to an unofficial analysis Tekkens number 3, 5 and 7 sold by far the best (above 8 million units per title).

Fighting games in good shape

The year 2023 promises to be a good one for fighting game fans, thanks to two major titles: Street Fighter 6 (scheduled release date: June 2, 2023) and Tekken 8 (the exact date is unknown, but it is possible that the release will be delayed to 2024). According to rumors (via: GamingBolt), the coming year will also bring the announcement of Mortal Kombat 12. It is worth recalling that at this year's TGA (The Game Awards) gala, in the category "Best Fighting Game", the winner was the brilliantly received MultiVersus.
