It is hardly a discovery to state that every gaming platform attracts an audience geared toward specific video game genres. Racing or sports games are great on gamepads, while card or puzzle games are great on mobiles. There is also, of course, the PC - the king of freedom. Thanks to an analysis conducted by gamediscover based on the choices of the website's subscribers, we can track current trends in the interval of 10 months. The results of the study took the form of two summaries - one shows the situation as of January 1, 2022, and the other the status as of September 21, 2022.

Looking at the compilation, one can come to a variety of conclusions.

• The composite genres (including strategy games and simulators), requiring more involvement on the part of the players, are invariably very popular. Examples of games: Songs of Conquest, Total War Warhammer 3, Hard West 2.
• Player interest is in many cases fluid, resulting in the emergence and disappearance of trends, linked, for example, to the release of one large, dominant game. For example: Farming Simulator 22, released in November 2021, increased the popularity of the "farm simulator" category, which then fell from 2nd to 8th spot in the 10-month interval covered by the survey.
• Games representing niche genres (platformers, 2D games, twin-stick shooter), usually relatively easy to make, occupy low positions, making these categories outside the ranking.

The data can be interpreted in many ways. The main conclusion is that it only takes a few months for trends to change noticeably, and it is difficult to predict future hits. However, it is possible to isolate genres that do not cease to attract attention - these include grand strategies and 4X strategy games.

Steam - analysis

The search for trends is also helped by Steam. Based on the tags, we can determine the number of games belonging to a particular genre among the 9,000 titles released in 2022 and planned for the future. Of the main categories, the most extensive are action (4612 games), adventure (4596), RPG (2490) and simulators (2005). However, the stats are poor - they only show the number of games assigned to each category, with no insight into actual popularity among gamers.
