The warm reception of the remasters of the early installments of the Tomb Raider series didn't save the Crystal Dynamics studio from layoffs.
Crystal Dynamics is the latest studio affected by layoffs.
Crystal Dynamics is owned by the Embracer Group, which in the last two years has massively laid off employees and closed many studios, like Volition and Free Radical Design (creators of the Timesplitters series).
Recently, Crystal Dynamics has been mainly focused on refreshing older projects. The team, together with Aspyr Media studio (also owned by Embracer), developed Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered. All these titles were warmly received, but as you can see, it didn't save Crystal Dynamics from layoffs.

Crystal Dynamics is a major studio with several hundred employees, so letting go of 17 people, while unfortunate for those impacted, shouldn't greatly impact the team's workflow.
Right now, Crystal Dynamics is working on the next installment of the Tomb Raider series and, together with The Initiative studio, is handling the reboot of the Perfect Dark series.
