Top Gun 2 Only in Cinemas as Paramount Rejects Offers From Netflix and Apple

The Wall Street Journal reports that Paramount Pictures has rejected a proposal to release Top Gun: Maverick on digital distribution platforms. The studio expects huge profits from the theatrical release.

The coronavirus doesn't let up in the new year, much to the worry of the movie industry, forced to constantly delay subsequent theatrical premieres. Of course, there's always digital distribution, but some studios don't think that's the best idea. This apparently includes Paramount Pictures, which refused to release Top Gun: Maverick on streaming platforms.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the new Top Gun has attracted interest from Netflix and AppleTV, among others . However, Paramount Pictures allegedly rejected all such offers. The reason was supposedly the forecast of huge profits from the movie's premiere in cinemas, which - assuming lack of delays - will take place in July. However, others point out that studio's reluctance may also stem from the plans of ViacomCBS (owner of Paramount Pictures). On March 4, the company will launch its own steaming service - Paramount . It should be noted that at the premiere the platform will be available only in the US and Latin America.

Perhaps Paramount Pictures also hopes that by July the wave of vaccinations against COVID-19 will have improved the situation, which the whole movie industry probably looks forward to. If that doesn't happen, the studio still has six months to decide whether to release Top Gun: Maverick in digital distribution. Or another delay, though as we know that option can prove costly for producers.
