"We Thought The Witcher 3 Will be a Disaster," Says Dev

Miles Tost – a level designer working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – has recently admitted during a podcast that there was a moment when the developers thought that their game will be a total flop.

The creators were not so sure of The Witcher 3's success.

Released in 2015 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from CD Projekt RED is considered to be one of the best games in the history of the RPG genre, which is clearly demonstrated by its excellent reviews. It turns out, however, that at the production stage the success of the game was a great unknown... even for its creators. One of the game's level designers - Miles Tost - shared his memories about this topic during a recent podcast.

We thought that The Witcher 3 would be a disaster [...] Creative work could not be finished. You could see that the game is getting better, but you also saw all its drawbacks, said Miles Tost.

The key to success of The Witcher 3 was a convincing world creation, and the creators' huge ambitions in terms of location size and level of detail caused that at some point numerous details were missing, and the game gave the impression of a badly matched puzzle. Some developers thought that their production would not gather good reviews. Worse still, there was no time for major changes - their introduction could have aggravated the situation. The level designer admits that the atmosphere in the studio was not the best at the time. When the developers started to focus too much on the problems, Tost decided to relax the situation a little, sending his colleagues a fabricated summary of a review of the first installment. The note 78/100 contained in it, to put it mildly, was not well received.

Not everything went according to plan during the production of The Witcher 3.

The game turned out to be a great success, which allowed the studio to jump into AAA league. Let's hope that the creators will prove their skills in the upcoming - and supposedly even more ambitious - Cyberpunk 2077. So far the presented materials from the game give us hope that it will be so.
