15 Indie Games With Best Graphics

Indie games are customarily developed by relatively small teams, so they rarely bring "vast, open world" and complex decision systems. Nevertheless, some of them simply can dazzle you with their audiovisual design!

Abzu

  1. Genre: adventure game
  2. Engine: Unreal Engine 4
  3. Music: Austin Wintory

The game is based on Sumerian mythology – in particular, the myth of the ocean goddess Tiamat and the god of fresh water Abzu. In the early stages, this production was intended to allow a journey across the ocean from the perspective of a diver with a certain amount of oxygen in the cylinder. Over time, however, the creators found it insufficiently entertaining and removed any biological boundaries of the protagonist, giving them the depths for almost unlimited exploration.

When Abzu was first being developed, Unreal Engine 4 was just entering the market. The developers were therefore worried whether they would be able to introduce everything they wanted to the game. However, they were aided by Derek Cornish – a specialist who improved the engine for the needs of this particular project. Thanks to this, we can admire its full potential in the game – and it does make a great impression!

The soundtrack to Abzu was showered with prizesthe composer managed to win in 2016, among others, a statuette for the best original soundtrack for an interactive game or spectacle awarded by the prestigious International Film Music Critics Association. Anyway, never mind the prizes. You can simply listen to Wintory's tracks endlessly outside of the game.

SUBNAUTICA

Subnautica doesn't draw from Sumerian mythology, but is essentially very similar to Abzu. Within a few years of production, the game evolved from a relatively small project into a real underwater sandbox. Players still complain about bugs that appear from time to time, but it must be admitted that, at least visually, Subnautica is delightful.
