The Best MMO RPGs to Play in 2023

Massively-online RPGs is much bigger than World of Warcraft! There are quite a few games that are worthy competition for the venerable king, and we'll try to introduce them. Here's a list of the best MMOs!

Table of Contents

World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment

  1. Business model: pay-to-play
  2. Platform: PC

We have no compelling evidence that World of Warcraft is no longer the king of the MMORPG genre. Nevertheless, I cannot honestly consider this title as "number 1" and recommend it as such. It's still a solid game, offering a lot of content and a tempting world. Shadowlands may not have been the best expansion and didn't stand the test of time, but – to be clear – it's not that bad with WoW; it just should have been much better. Things were only improved by Dragonflight, which made the old WoW skyrocket in popularity again. The DLC was positively rated by the majority of players.

Despite all the complaints, World of Warcraft is still a game worth recommending. Regardless of the old tab-target combat system, it was possible to maintain a certain level of dynamics, and the skills can be clearly felt. Although the development system seems to be overcomplicated, and the multitude of options can be overwhelming, you can't complain about the amount of stuff to do. It's a pity that it all seems not entirely well thought-out, especially when looking through the prism of changes made in two of the last three expansions. Fortunately, the last expansion, Dragonflight, has redirected many elements, including the profession system, on the right track. Let's hope that the future will be even better.

Who's this game for? For people who are taking their first steps in the genre and are focused on PvE elements, and are not bothered by a temporary stagnation in new content.

Is it regularly supported? Yes and no – there are updates, but they are pretty rare.

Similar games: WildStar, EverQuest II.

Is it pay-to-win? Nope.

There are always Classics

If the current World of Warcraft does not suit you, you can always try the Classic version, which is now available in four editions. We have WoW Classic, WoW Burning Crusade Classic, WoW Wrath of the Lich King, and a seasonal variation of WoW Classic. It significantly changes the original game, speeding up leveling and making challenges more difficult. This is actually something that can attract players and refresh the gameplay a bit. However, most will play WotLK anyway, because Frostmourne is hungry!
