The Best Strategy & RTS Games of 2021 - Editors' Choice

Although the golden era of strategy is gone, it does not mean that the genre has completely died. 2021 proves that fans can still find at least a few productions worth attention.

8. Timberborn

  1. Developer: Mechanistry
  2. Platform: PC
  3. Game summary: a city builder starring beavers

This unique simulator centered around building beaver colonies has been developed by an independent Polish studio. The game's very theme and the name of the genre invented by its developers (lumberpunk) are enough to grab one's attention. However, an interesting concept isn't the only thing that the developers from Mechanistry studio have up their sleeve.

Although Timberborn is still in Early Access (on Steam), it's already a well-made game. Suffice to say, it has a 95% positive user review score on Valve's platform. It's no surprise, considering that building beaver settlements turns out to be really addictive, but also complex in just the right measure. The first structures raised by your beaver builders may look modest, but don't be fooled. Once you've invested enough time into the game, you will be able to construct complex machinery and vast dams.

In fact, just watching the beavers bustling about is a joy in itself. Well, unless they all die because there's not enough water during the dry season. You need to keep in mind that Timberborn isn't an easy game. However, if you feel that you are the perfect candidate for a beaver mayor, you should definitely give this unique title a try.

The game's biggest pluses:

  1. beavers;
  2. many different ways to develop the colony;
  3. the ability to control rivers and the mechanic of rainy and dry seasons.
