What do The Witcher 3, GTA and Mortal Kombat have in common? Perhaps curiously, playing big games usually implies playing smaller ones, and some of the mini-games are truly exquisite. Here's our selection of the best ones.

Unlikely types of cooperation are nothing new, which doesn't surprise anyone in the video game world. Movie icons like Alien, Predator, and Terminator perform fatality in games from the Mortal Kombat series. In Monster Hunter World players participated in events related to Horizon: Zero Dawn and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, on the other hand, allows you to play as half the icons of Japanese games. Still, the collaboration between Sony and Konami during the PS2 era can surprise even today. And it was even more surprising a dozen years ago.

As part of the agreement, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Ape Escape 3 were to advertise to each other within a relatively short period of time. It ain't much, if not for the dedication with which the developers of both games fulfilled their terms of cooperation. Ape Escape 3, a platform game about catching Apes, featured a mini-game called Mesal Gear Solid, which was a parody of the plot of the first Metal Gear Solid. In Metal Gear Solid 3, however, there were extra missions that put the Big Boss's one-man army against the Apes.

The Snake vs. Monkey mode doesn't deviate as much from the traditional Metal Gear Solid series gameplay mechanics as you'd expect from the whole concept. It all takes place within closed levels that are sections of Snake Eater's main campaign, and players' job is to locate, overpower, and catch the jungle-dwelling and comically behaving monkeys. If they spot you, they begin to flee, so in order to succeed, one has to utilize typical infiltration techniques.

Absurdities have always accompanied the Metal Gear Solid series, perhaps hence Snake vs. Monkey seems to fit so well with the rest of the game, providing a very original complement to it. Unfortunately, probably for licensing reasons, this mode was not included in the later HD reissues of Snake Eater – today it is only available on PlayStation 2.
