The developers intended the game to combine the storyline of the PC original with brand new mechanics, adapted to the specifics and capabilities of seventh-generation consoles.

The plot of the add-on is focused on a pirate captain and his crew who are confined on a cursed archipelago. The player helps the corsair save his beloved, find the legendary treasure, and suppress a mutiny on his ship.

This is another part of the series with a rich history - its first part, Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished, was published in 1987.
