The creators prepared several airports with different infrastructure and scale of difficulties. For the purposes of the game, 60 models of authentic planes were faithfully reproduced and pilots' announcements were recorded.

Natural Selection 2 is set in a universe torn by the war between the falling human race and space invaders. Players choose a side and take control of either one of the Frontiersmen - an elite group of highly-trained marines - or one of the several hostile alien life-forms, dubbed as Kharaa, each possessing unique combat strategies. Gameplay combines the aspects of multiplayer first-person shooters with real-time strategy elements. Combat takes place on interactive maps and the course of the game can be altered by e.g. cutting off elevators’ power supply or switching off lights throughout the base, making each match a unique experience. The Commanders are a new addition to the game; they are given a top-down view of the map, and their role is to build structures as well as support and coordinate their teammates.
