A classic two-dimensional vertical shoot-em-all, taking place in a science-fiction universe. Xenogears was developed by an independent Finnish studio 10tons. The game takes us to 2032, where a conflict called the first galactic war forces humanity to defend its planet using an improvised fleet consisting of civilian space ships armed with various weaponry. As per the genre staples, the gameplay focuses around elimination of approaching hordes of enemies, interrupted from time to time with boss encounters that require more attention and a bit of tactical approach. Procedurally generated levels are definitely an interesting feature of the game – a level may play out different with every new playthrough, with the players unable to learn the enemies’ behavior by heart. Aside from that, the forces of humanity ale always represented by a wing – four fighters with different weaponry, with the player able to switch to a different unit depending on the type of enemy, or invite his friends to take over the remaining fighters in a local co-op mode.

The game does not feature a typical story campaign; you lead one of the factions during a great conflict. In terms of mechanics, there are two aspects of the gameplay. The first aspect is a strategic one, in which you train your armies, move them around the map, manage your resources, and conquer more areas. The mode is additionally varied by collecting and using special cards. When two armies meet, the game switches into battle mode, combining the elements of shooter games and RTS, and you control one of the soldiers, using a wide range of firearms.

A 2D mobile platform game, utilizing the free-to-play model with microtransactions. Super Cat Bros. is based on oldschool platform games, so the plot is not of much importance. You play a cat named Alex, who has to find his five siblings on a mysterious island, and find a way to travel back home. You have to complete small 2D levels by fighting enemies and avoiding various dangers. One level may take you a few minutes, but you often need more than just one try, as they are difficult to beat. Since all the cats have unique abilities, not all of the levels can be completed by playing as just one character, so you have to return to some of them after unlocking the right cat. During the game, you collect bells, which you can use to buy items and recruit allies. Super Cat Bros. features an oldchool style, based on 16-bit platform games.

A 2D platform game by Analgesic Productions, the authors of Anodyne. Even the Ocean follows the story of a woman called Aliph, who has a low-paid job in one of the power stations in the futuristic city of Whiteforge. One day, thanks to an unexpected twist of fate, Aliph gains strange powers and the Mayor employs her to fight unknown invaders. Despite the seemingly cliché plot, the story touches upon serious topics, although if you are more interested in the gameplay itself, you can choose the story-lite version. Mechanics-wise, Even the Ocean is a classic platform game, in which you explore 2D levels, avoid obstacles, fight enemies and solve puzzles. You can also talk to NPCs. A certain novelty is the energy bar, which affects Aliph's speed and jump range. The protagonist also has a shield, which she can use to deflect projectiles and find a new use for various elements of her surroundings.

Adventure, Crowdfunding, Humorous, Point-and-click, Science Fiction, Singleplayer.

A three-dimensional adventure game funded via Kickstarter, and a debut production from the Irish studio BillyGoat Entertainment. Her Majesty’s Spiffing is a humorous story taking place in modern times. The Queen of Great Britain has decided to add new lands to the empire, but the modern times don’t allow a simple conquest of the neighboring countries anymore. As a result, the Queen has established Special Planetary Investigative Force for Inhabiting New Galaxies – a government organization that prepares for the first manned space flight in the history of Great Britain, and the foundation of the Galactic British Empire. The mechanics of Her Majesty’s Spiffing are similar to what can be experienced in classic point-and-click adventure games – the creators have been visibly inspired by the games from the hands of developers such as Tim Shafer, Ron Gilbert, Gary Winnick, or Dave Grossman. Therefore, the players are occupied with exploration and search for items that are necessary for clearing the encountered obstacles, as well as conducting dialogues that push the plot forward. The humorous theme is complemented by cartoonish visuals.

Another large expansion pack for an MMORPG entitled The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (created by ZeniMax Online Studios). The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited - Morrowind gives us an opportunity to visit the island of Vvardenfell, which is located in the titular province of Morrowind. The plot revolves around a mysterious sickness which has taken its toll on Vivec - a member of the Trinity of divine entities that have guarded this part of the world. The player's task will be to find the medicine and restore Vivec to health. Exploration and completing different quests given by the inhabitants of an extensive world remain the core of the experience. Fighting various enemies is another important part of the game. Although one can experience what this world has to offer solo, the adventure gets deeper when the player is accompanied by others. Apart from an additional place to explore and a new storyline, the add-on introduces a new character class, that is, the Warden. This class makes a great use of the magic of nature, but is also supported in combat by a tamed bear. A new PvP mode constitutes another novelty - the Battlegrounds are focused on three teams of four players fighting one another.

Players get to observe from the side-perspective how the two protagonists explore small, surreal locations and solve both environmental and logic puzzles based on manipulating the time and matter. Particular worlds (the titular Gardens) have been built in a cylindrical form - they have one central point composed of the objects from Arina's and Frendt's past (e.g. a computer with all its components or gardening tools). An original platform game created by Splashteam - an independent studio founded by a former Ubisoft employee, who had co-created such games as Rayman Origins or Rayman Legends. Splasher takes the player to the headquarters of Inkorp, a company managed by Le Docteur. This ominous figure decides to break the daily routine at the company and bring the workers to their knees. One of the employees is the game's protagonist, who tries to stop the villain and save his co-workers. The player makes use of an unusual weapon - the Splatter Cannon, which shoots with colored ink. The core of the experience is constituted by exploration, avoiding various traps, and fighting the enemies encountered. Depending on the ink color used, the player gets different results, such as dealing damage, creating surfaces to climb on, sticking the protagonist to various objects, or bouncing the titular Splasher off them. The protagonist dies relatively often; learning the lessons brought by one's mistakes is the key to victory in this game.

Super Stickman Golf 3 is another installment in the 2D arcade games series started in 2011 by Noodlecake. Just like in the previous games in the series, the developers have taken a not-too-serious approach to the rather snobbish and old-fashioned sport. There are twenty types of golf courses available in the game: from Sherwood forests, through deserts, and all the way to arctic glaciers. Players will have to place the ball in a hole with the smallest number of hits. As we play, we will encounter many different obstacles, like trapdoors, traps, portals, etc. We can play as one of the thirty five available characters, such as mummy, surgeon, or sunbather. There are many different bonuses available in the game, like cards that will level up our character or their equipment. The game has colorful visuals. Super Stickman Golf 3 has a multiplayer mode that allows the player to compete in real-time or in turns.
