The player controls a party of adventurers who have to stop the evil Dhoulmagus and remove the curse he placed on the king and his daughter. They also encounter friendly NPCs with whom they can trade and talk. Visually, Dragon Quest VIII resembles Dark Cloud 2: it has three-dimensional graphics combined with cel shading rendering which gives them cartoonish looks. The characters' were designed by a famous mangaka, Akira Toriyama, known primarily for his work on the Dragon Ball franchise.
