A beat'em up game with roguelike mechanics, developed by Dotemu, Guard Crush, and Supamonks studios. In Absolum, we travel through a fantasy land, playing alone or in co-op. Our characters have to face groups of enemies, relying on close combat, ranged attacks, and magic.
Dotemu and Guard Crush are development studios that specialize primarily in beat 'em ups. They have collaborated in the past to create Streets of Rage 4 . Their next venture, this time developed in cooperation with Supamonks, is Absolum described here. It is a production combining a brawler gameplay scheme with mechanics straight from roguelikes.
In Absolum we watch the action from the side.
During the game we take on the role of various characters . Galandra is a battle-hardened warrior wielding a sword and possessing necromancy powers. Karl is a dwarf who uses his ancestral blunderbuss and the strength of his fists, as well as relies on explosives. Over time, they are joined by others, including the brilliant wizard Brome and a warrior known as Cider.
We explore the fantasy world of Talamh in the game. The adventure takes us through various locations with a variable layout, including the Grandera mines and the lush forests of Jaroba. We primarily engage in combat with enemies.
The combat system implemented in the game rewards speed, reflexes and the ability to efficiently juggle available attacks and combat skills . On the battlefield, we make use of firearms, ranged weapons, and magic. The key to success is being in constant movement, avoiding attacks, executing magical counters, and merging moves into spectacular combos.
The action of Absolum takes place in a fantasy land known as Talamh. After ambitious wizards caused a devastating cataclysm, Azra, the Sun King, enslaved them and seized the opportunity to gradually conquer its various regions. His victorious march can only be stopped by the arch-sorceress Uchawi and her rebels wielding forbidden magic, whom we embody.
Absolum can be played solo or in co-op mode (over the internet or on a shared screen).
The graphics in Absolum are kept in a cartoon style. The game is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by artists such as Gareth Coker (Ori, Halo Infinite), Mick Gordon (Doom) and Yuka Kitamura (Elden Ring).

Absolum review: How I learned to love a co-op beat ‘em up roguelike
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the team of veteran beat ‘em up developers made another great beat ‘em up game. Absolum evolves the best parts of classic beat ‘em up action and weaves it with an original story, a compelling world, and roguelike elements. This doesn’t seem like a game that should work as well as it does, but it’s some of the most fun I’ve had with a co-op game this year.
In a post thanking the community for their support, the team behind surprise indie hit Absolum has teased future content updates and possible support for years.

Absolum is getting great reviews from players, who see the game as a combination of Hades and Streets of Rage 4. The title even appealed to one of CD Projekt Red's employees.

The Punished Backlog: 8 / 10 by David Silbert
Absolum is one of the toughest games I’ve ever reviewed. Structurally, it’s a letdown, with disappointing balance choices, unrelenting RNG, and a progression system that feels half-baked in comparison with other contemporary roguelikes. Mechanically, however, it’s probably the strongest beat-em-up I’ve ever played. The sublime combat ultimately wins out. Even when I was struggling to grind through runs, I was having a blast stringing up combos and laying waste to my enemies. If Dotemu ever decides to make a sequel, they could be on to something revolutionary. For now, Absolum will just have to settle as something great.
Try Hard Guides: 10 / 10 by Erik Hodges
Absolum blew me away with its mastery of the side-scrolling beat-’em-up and roguelike genres, seamlessly combining the two in a game that is exceptional on a technical level and a blast to play. Paired with the excellent combat and roguelike loop are phenomenal characters, great worldbuilding, and gorgeous art, making for a game that is an absolute steal at just $25.
Push Square: 8 / 10 by Robert Ramsey
Absolum is both a brilliantly crafted beat-'em-up and a devilishly addictive roguelike. Although the overall experience does feel slightly short-lived, you'll seriously struggle to tear yourself away from the game's striking fantasy world - especially when all of its systems start to click.
