Release Date: April 9, 2013
A remastered version of Age of Empire II: The Age of the Kings, a popular real-time strategy game and its expansion - Age of Empires II: The Conqueror. The new edition was developed by Hidden Path Entertainment in cooperation with Microsoft Game Studios. Compared to the 1999’s original, the changes introduced in Age of Empires II: HD Edition involve mainly improved graphics, which were adjusted to HD standard.
Age of Empires II HD is a remake of a classic real-time strategy game from 1999 – Age of Empires II: The Age of the Kings – and its add-on, Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, that was released a year later. The very gameplay has not changed, however, the graphics was improved, and the application was adapted to run on the latest operating systems. The game owes its second youth to Hidden Path Entertainment Studios (Defense Grid series, Counter- Strike: Global Offensive). It is them whom Microsoft company has entrusted the development of Age of Empires II HD, after Ensemble Studios – the team standing behind the original game – was closed in 2009.
Age of Empires II veterans know perfectly well that the historical background of the game was the Middle Ages. Of course, the same is true for its HD version. The game includes all campaigns and civilizations known from The Age of the Kings and The Conquerors.
Players choose one of 18 nations (including the Vikings, Japanese, Byzantines, Mongols, Aztecs, Koreans), whom they lead to development and domination over others. Individual nations differ from one another in terms of architecture, available technology, and their strengths and weaknesses. Many roads lead to victory - military conquest, economic expansion, or constructing and protecting a Wonder of the World. The main objectives the player has to take care of, are recruiting troops, expanding cities, developing various technologies, and conducting trade. The gameplay, including battles, is played out in real time. Skirmishes involve infantry units, cavalry, siege weapons, and ships.
In addition to single player mode, there is multiplayer in Age of Empires II HD. Steam integration allowed introduction of matchmaking system that connects together players with similar skills. Steam also provides leaderboards, achievements, and an option of storing saved games in a cloud. Fans of modifications can take advantage of Steam Workshop in order to easily share and download fan-made mods.
The most noticeable changes were made to the artwork. Admittedly, the Age of Empires II HD is nothing like the latest games, but the graphics has gained a lot thanks to the increased resolution, improved textures, and new water, fire and light effects. On top of that, the game offers multi-monitor support.

The third expansion to Age of Empires II HD, a remade edition of a popular real-time strategy game, developed as a joint effort between SkyBox Labs and Forgotten Empires. The new add-on introduces four Asian civilizations: Burmese, Khmers, Malays, and Vietnamese, each with its unique units. Additionally, the game received two new universal units – battle elephants and imperial infantry. The core of the add-on are four campaigns taking place in South East Asia. Aside from that, Age of Empires II HD: Rise of the Rajas brings a completely new type of terrain (mangrove forests), five new random, special, and historical maps, improved unit AI and new objects for the in-game editor. The DLC also incorporates a set of fixes that were prepared as part of the expansion, and then released as a free upgrade for the owners of the core game. The list of fixes includes improved network code and the option to resume interrupted matches.

Strategy
The second expansion to Age of Empires II: HD Edition from 2013. Unlike the first DLC, which was a commercial remake of a fan-made modification to the original Age of Empires II, The African Kingdoms was built from ground up entirely by the developers of the original game, Hidden Path Entertainment. The expansion takes us once more to the Middle Ages, however, this time we travel to a completely different region of the world – the African continent. There, you take command of such nations as the Berbers, Malians, and Ethiopians, as well as the Portuguese. Each nation has its unique architecture, technology, and units (e.g. camel archers). In terms of gameplay mechanics, the DLC introduces an innovation - varied surfaces. Your choice to construct buildings on rock, sand, or other terrain will now affect the construction's stability.

Strategy
The first official expansion for the remastered edition of the cult-classic strategy game – Age of Empires II: HD Edition, developed by Hidden Path Entertainment. The expansion is a commercial version of Forgotten Empires, a fan-made modification, and was developed as a joint effort between SkyBox Labs Vancouver and the authors of the modification. The add-on takes us to Southern Europe, introducing four new medieval campaigns, each dedicated to a different historical house (Alaric, Sforza, Bari, and Dracula). Aside from that, we are introduced to five new civilizations (Italian, Indian, Slavic, Hungarian, and Inca), along with unique troops, buildings, and techs. When it comes to mechanics, the add-on offers four times bigger maps than the core game, and introduces a number of fixes to balance and enemy AI. Multiplayer enthusiasts are treated with new game modes, such as Treaty or Capture the Relic.
