Amnesia: Rebirth is the third instalment of the FPP survival horror series launched in 2010. Unlike the previous part, the game was created by Frictional Games studio, the authors of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Penumbra series.

Plot

Amnesia: Rebirth is set in the Algerian desert. However, this is not a feature continuation of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, but a new game in the same universe. In the third installment of the series we play the role of Tasi Trianon, who remembers nothing of her past and sets off on a terrifying, dangerous adventure.

  • Engaging Story and Lore: The narrative received positive feedback for its emotional depth, particularly the themes of motherhood and loss, which resonated with players. The game expands the lore of the Amnesia universe, tying in elements from previous titles.
  • Character Development: The protagonist, Tasi, was noted for having a compelling and relatable story arc, with some players appreciating the emotional weight of her journey.
  • Puzzles and Gameplay Mechanics: The game includes a variety of puzzles, with some players finding them enjoyable and well-integrated into the story.
  • Multiple Endings: The presence of different endings based on player choices added replay value and depth to the narrative.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive and Tedious Gameplay: Several reviews highlighted that the gameplay could become tedious, with long stretches of walking and repetitive mechanics, particularly in the second half of the game.
  • Lack of Scares and Horror Elements: Many players felt that the game was not as scary as previous entries in the series, with some describing it as more of a walking simulator than a horror game.
  • Overly Talkative Protagonist: Tasi’s frequent self-talk and dialogue were criticized for breaking immersion and detracting from the horror experience.
  • Confusing Pacing and Storytelling: Some users found the pacing uneven, with long cutscenes and flashbacks interrupting gameplay flow, making it hard to stay engaged.
  • Poorly Executed Mechanics: Certain gameplay mechanics, like the sanity system and the interaction with enemies, were seen as weak or unclear, leading to frustration.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Traditional Horror Elements: Players expressed a desire for more direct horror experiences, such as more frequent monster encounters and a stronger sense of danger throughout the game.
  • Improved Navigation and Clarity: Suggestions included a better map system or clearer objectives to help guide players through the game, as some felt lost or confused at times.
  • Less Linear Gameplay: Some users wished for more exploration and freedom in gameplay, rather than the linear progression that often felt like a chore.
  • Unique Monster Encounters: There were calls for more varied and interesting enemy designs and encounters, as some felt that the existing ones became predictable and less threatening.

Summary

  • Overall, while *Amnesia: Rebirth* has its strengths in storytelling and atmosphere, it also faces criticism for pacing, gameplay mechanics, and a perceived lack of horror that some fans of the series expected.
