Developed by Zen Studios, CastleStorm II is a combination of Angry Birds gameplay style and tower defence mechanics. Players take on the role of castle rulers, who have to defend their fortress from dangers, and in the case of a multiplayer game - from other players. A novelty in relation to its predecessor is the greater emphasis on strategic aspects. In CastleStorm II, players can build their own empire and manage it in the turn-based mode on a map.
In CastleStorm II players return to fairytale and colourful lands, where a new threat is awaiting them, namely the undead. The creators have prepared 6 story campaigns: each tells a story of a different hero.
Similarly to its predecessor, in CastleStorm II, players assume the role of the castle rules. However, being a feudal lord is not easy and they are often forced to defend their domain and at the same time conquer or destroy other fortresses. A novelty in the series is the extension of the strategic mode.
In the game, players have a castle at their disposal, on top of which there is a ballista designed to destroy fortifications and hold back enemy units. Its projectiles resemble characters from the Angry Birds series - players plan on where and from what angle to shoot a missile. There are also several types of missiles: from the simplest bolts to flying eagles - each with its own unique properties useful in a variety of situations.
CastleStorm II also offers combat units - their choice depends on the chambers players decide to build in their castle. One also has the opportunity to briefly take control of the hero - a powerful combat unit - and take it directly to the battlefield.
New to the series is the expansion of the strategic layer of the game - now players can lead the development of their empire and gain new territories, as well as take care of the economy. Zen Studios offered the players a turn-based strategy game with action taking place on a map divided into hexagons.
Again, the players have at their disposal a competitive and a cooperative multiplayer modes that support cross-platform functionalities. In the multiplayer mode, one will stand up to fight against another player as well as defend themselves against threats posed by a computer opponent.
It's worth mentioning that the visuals in CastleStorm II: feature a fairytale-like style and colors seem to be taken from the Warcraft or The Settlers series.
