The Royal Court is the first big expansion for the strategy game Crusader Kings III, released in September 2020. The add-on was developed by the creators of the original, the Paradox Development Studio team, and its release was handled by Paradox Interactive.

Mechanics

The first novelty introduced in Crusader Kings III: The Royal Court is the throne room. It is a visual representation of our royal majesty and our workplace. This is where we receive vassals and members of our court, as well as messengers from other kingdoms. It is also where we settle disputes, where we pass judgement on trivial matters as well as those that affect our entire kingdom. As a result, the throne room has to look its best. In order to improve its appearance, we can decorate it with various ornaments, or rely on the work of various artists who will be happy to share their works with us.

The publisher of the first installment was Strategy First, and each subsequent installment was published by Paradox Interactive.

IGN: 9 / 10 by Leana Hafer

Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court is the best kind of strategy expansion, weaving in new features that make running a kingdom a more complete and cohesive experience.

Full Review

GameWatcher: 8 / 10 by Bogdan Robert Mate?

Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court adds plenty of flavor and introduces new ways to obtain bonuses for your realm while fleshing out how deeply you can interact with it. The feature that gives it its name isn't as grand as it could be, due to repeating events and a 3D space that becomes a bit boring to look at even if you change its architectural style.

The main pros of the game

  • Immersive Court System: The addition of a 3D throne room enhances the visual and narrative experience, allowing players to feel like true monarchs. Players can decorate their courts, adding personality and flavor.
  • Hold Court Events: These events introduce varied and entertaining scenarios where players can resolve disputes and make decisions, offering prestige, gold, and other rewards.
  • Cultural Hybridization and Divergence: This feature allows players to create hybrid cultures and customize their cultural attributes, adding depth to gameplay and enhancing role-playing opportunities.
  • Artifacts and Court Grandeur: Players can collect and display artifacts that provide gameplay bonuses, contributing to the overall richness of the game.
  • Flavor Events: The expansion introduces numerous small events that enhance role-playing and narrative elements, adding depth to character interactions.

The main cons of the game

  • High Price Point: Many players feel that the $30 price tag is excessive for the content offered, with some suggesting it should be priced much lower.
  • Limited Accessibility: Only kings and emperors can utilize the court system, making it inaccessible to lower-tier rulers, which can limit its appeal.
  • Repetitive Events: Players report that the Hold Court events can become repetitive over time, diminishing their initial novelty.
  • Underwhelming Artifact System: While collecting artifacts is enjoyable, many players feel their gameplay impact is minimal, focusing more on flavor than strategic depth.
  • UI and Performance Issues: Some players have experienced difficulties with UI clutter and crashes, particularly when interacting with the court system.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Content Should Be Base Game: Many players believe that key features like the court system and cultural mechanics should have been included in the base game rather than as paid DLC.
  • More Interactive Court: Users express a desire for a more dynamic court environment, with animations and more engaging interactions.
  • Accessibility for Lower Titles: There is a call for the court system to be available to dukes and counts, allowing for a more inclusive gameplay experience.
  • Improved Artifact Management: Players wish for better UI options to manage and compare artifacts, as the current system can become cumbersome.
  • Expanded Gameplay Features: Suggestions include additional court-related gameplay mechanics, such as the ability to visit other courts or more diverse events that impact gameplay meaningfully.

Summary

  • Overall, while the Royal Court DLC adds interesting features and enhances immersion, many players feel it falls short in value for the price and lacks depth in certain areas.
