Port Royale 4 is the fourth installment of the economic strategy series. The project was developed by Gaming Minds Studios, a team that developed such titles as Port Royale 3: Pirates & Merchants, Patrician IV, Rise of Venice and Railway Empire.

Mechanics

The action of the game is set in the 17th century in the Caribbean. We play as governor of a small settlement whose goal is to create an empire that includes many islands. Port Royale 4 focuses on the economic aspect. We can build fifty types of buildings, half of which are structures used for the production of various types of goods. The player must develop the economy and learn how to balance expenditure and investment.

The key role in the game is played by trade, in which we can conduct business with 60 cities. We transport goods by sea, so it is very important to create routes that avoid dangerous areas such as cliffs and shallows. The weather also influences the voyages of ships. All this is done in real-time.

COGconnected: 68 / 100 by Haley Perry

Overall, Port Royale 4 lends beautiful design to its historical ships and detailed buildings, and the turn-based strategy naval battles are a nice change of pace from the large, lulling overview map you will spend most of your time in.

PCGamesN: 8 / 10 by Marcello Perricone

A broad management/economic game with great graphics where you can conquer the Caribbean through money.

PC Invasion: 5.5 / 10 by Jason Rodriguez

Port Royale 4 might have quirks that are interesting at a glance such as automated trade routes and a vast map. Looking closer, you'll realize that its core mechanics are cumbersome and unintuitive, its naval battles are plainly uninteresting, and there's not a whole lot that would seem enticing. It lacks all the dynamism despite a time period known for swashbuckling excitement.

The main cons of the game

  • Shallow Gameplay: Critics argue that the game avoids complexity, with city management reduced to basic resource juggling and naval combat lacking tactical depth.

  • Historical Accuracy: Some players expressed disappointment over the historical representation, feeling that certain elements, like the portrayal of piracy and colonial dynamics, are lacking.
  • Additional Content: Users mentioned the absence of side quests, character interactions (like marriages), and a more engaging storyline, which were present in earlier games.

Summary
