007: First Light (which was developed under the code name Project 007) is an action game developed by the Danish studio IO Interactive, which has the best-selling Hitman series in its portfolio. The team took care of both creating and publishing this title. Although the game is based on an official license, it is not associated with any of the movies about agent 007.

Gameplay

In 007: First Light we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The adventure leads us through various locations as part of the story campaign. Individual missions can be repeated, activating various modifiers that affect the gameplay.

James Bond as universal as Hitman

Many of the visited places have a semi-open structure. When we get to them, the game allows us to decide how we approach achieving our goals, offering many paths. Discrete actions are often the best ones. We solve a kind of environmental puzzles, gathering information (e.g. by eavesdropping on conversations or participating in them; we can choose the character's statements within the dialogue system), collecting items and using disguises to gain access to restricted places - similar to the Hitman series.

Her Majesty's most famous agent is back, and the developers of 007: First Light are promising us a lot. At gamescom I had the opportunity to see the game in action, and while it raised my hopes, I have some doubts.

Console Creatures: 9 / 10 by Bobby Pashalidis

IO Interactive's 007 First Light is easily the best Bond game we've seen. Rare's GoldenEye 007 was momentous when it launched, and it's stuck around the zeitgeist because it was a portal into Ian Fleming's world of shaken martinis and spy thrills we'd never seen before. What 007 First Light feels like is a playable, limited spy series that transports the player into a gripping and memorable espionage story.

SavePoint Gaming: 8.5 / 10 by Harry Kalogirou

IO Interactive delivers a confident Bond origin story with 007 First Light, which balances social stealth, cinematic action, and improvisational combat, even if weak driving, forgiving AI, and slow early pacing stop it from reaching true elite-agent status.

The main pros of the game

  • Strong Storyline: Many users praised the engaging and well-written narrative, capturing the essence of a classic Bond adventure with interesting twists and character development.
  • Visuals and Presentation: The graphics are often described as stunning, with a cinematic quality that enhances the overall experience. The game runs smoothly on various hardware configurations.
  • Gameplay Variety: The mix of stealth, action, and gadget use was well-received. Players appreciated the ability to approach missions in multiple ways, reminiscent of the Hitman series but tailored to fit the Bond universe.
  • Character Portrayals: The portrayal of Bond and supporting characters, such as Q and Moneypenny, received positive feedback for their charm and engagement.
  • Gadgets and Action: The use of gadgets and the action sequences were highlighted as enjoyable and well-integrated into the gameplay.
  • Replayability: The TacSim mode offers additional challenges and encourages players to revisit missions with different approaches.

The main cons of the game

  • Linear Gameplay: Many reviews noted that the game feels overly linear, with limited player agency compared to Hitman. Players often felt directed along a specific path, reducing the sense of exploration.
  • AI Issues: Users pointed out that enemy AI can be lacking, making stealth less rewarding and combat sometimes too easy.
  • Pacing Issues: The game’s pacing, particularly in the early chapters, was criticized for being slow and bogged down by excessive cutscenes and tutorials.
  • Combat Mechanics: While some enjoyed the combat, others found it repetitive and simplistic, lacking depth and variety in enemy encounters.
  • Lack of Customization: Players expressed disappointment over the limited loadout options, particularly the inability to carry more gadgets or customize outfits during missions.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Open Environments: Users wished for a more open-world feel, similar to what is found in Hitman, allowing for greater exploration and player choice.
  • Enhanced Stealth Mechanics: Some players desired more robust stealth mechanics, including the ability to hide bodies and a more intelligent AI that reacts to player actions.
  • Dubbing Options: Lack of localized voice acting (e.g., in languages like Spanish or German) was a common complaint, affecting immersion for non-English speakers.
  • Improved Save Systems: Several players noted issues with checkpoint systems and the inability to save manually, leading to frustration during gameplay.

Conclusion

    Summary

    • Overall, 007 First Light is viewed as a solid entry in the Bond franchise, combining engaging storytelling with enjoyable gameplay mechanics. However, it suffers from linearity and AI issues that prevent it from reaching its full potential as a modern spy adventure. Players who appreciate cinematic experiences and Bond lore may find it worthwhile, while those seeking deeper gameplay mechanics might want to temper their expectations.
