Total War: Warhammer III - Thrones of Decay is an expansion to the strategic game titled Total War: Warhammer III, released in 2022. The DLC was developed by the authors of the base version, namely Creative Assembly studio. The add-on has been divided into three smaller packages dedicated to the individual lords that were introduced in it. This means players can only buy the content that interests them, however a complete set is also available.

Mechanics

Total War: Warhammer III - Thrones of Decay introduces three legendary lords, one each for Nurgle, the Empire and the dwarves. They can be used in the campaigns of the Kingdom of Chaos and the Empire of the Immortals.

  1. Tamurkhan, the Maggot Lord, one of the most powerful servants of Chaos, leads a crusade during which he defeats and recruits leaders from various factions. In this way, he strengthens his own horde in order to eventually compete for the title of Nurgle's greatest champion.
  2. Elspeth von Draken travels the world on the back of her Carmine Dragon, and thanks to her alliance with Nuln in defense of the Empire, she makes use of both magic and the benefits brought by artillery and firearms.
  3. Malakai Makaisson, on the other hand, is a talented dwarven engineer who is trying to regain his honor on the battlefield. He uses his skills to construct powerful weapons and large war machines.

This DLC also brings a number of additional units for individual factions. For example, the forces of Nurgle can deploy Toad Dragons into battle, the Empire gets to use Marienburg class land ships, while the dwarves can use airships. In addition, the expansion introduces new legendary heroes, such as Kayzk the Befouled (Nurgle), Garagrim Iron Fist (dwarves) and Theodore Bruckner (Empire).

The main pros of the game

  • Fun Gameplay: Many users find the gameplay enjoyable, highlighting the mix of role-playing elements and strategic warfare. The combination of gunpowder units, artillery, and death magic provides a fresh experience for Empire fans.
  • Diverse Units: The addition of new units, such as the Carmine Dragon, Amethyst Guard, and various gunpowder units, is praised for enhancing the Empire's roster and providing more tactical options.
  • Visual and Thematic Appeal: Elspeth's character design and the overall art direction of the DLC are appreciated, adding to the immersive experience of the campaign.

The main cons of the game

  • Price Concerns: Many users feel that the price of the DLC, particularly for a single character, is too high. Several recommend waiting for sales to purchase it.
  • Limited Confederation Options: Players express frustration over the inability to confederate with other Empire factions unless they own previous games, limiting strategic options.
  • AI and Balance Issues: Some reviews mention unbalanced AI and gameplay mechanics, with Elspeth's magic overpowering battles, making them feel less challenging over time.
  • Technical Issues: Users report ongoing bugs and performance issues in the game, which detract from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Lack of New Mechanics: Some players feel that the new mechanics introduced in this DLC are not significantly different from existing ones, leading to a sense of repetition within the Empire's gameplay.
  • Expanded Confederation Mechanics: Users desire better integration of confederation mechanics that do not require ownership of previous titles, which would enhance strategic gameplay.
  • More Variety in Units: While new units are introduced, some players feel that many of them are variations of existing units rather than entirely new concepts, leading to a lack of diversity in the roster.
  • Long-term Campaign Motivation: Several reviews indicate that the long-term motivation in the campaign could be improved, especially once players exhaust the technology tree.

Summary

  • Overall, the DLC is generally viewed positively, especially by fans of the Empire faction, but it does have notable drawbacks related to pricing, technical issues, and gameplay balance.
