The seventh installment in a series of economic strategies. Tropico 7 once again allows us to become El Presidente and rule a banana republic. This part of the series brings some new features, like terraforming the terrain, a system of political affiliation or a tactical aspect.
Tropico series began in 2001 and has changed hands over time. Haemimont Games holds the record for developing this series of economic strategies for the longest time. It allows us to manage the titular banana republic and the mentioned developer prepared its third, fourth and fifth installments. The sixth part of the series was the work of the Limbic Entertainment team, while Tropico 7 described here was developed by Gaming Minds Studios. We are talking about the team belonging to Kalypso Media (they oversee the discussed brand), which has in its portfolio such projects as Patrician IV, Port Royale 4, Railway Empire, and Railway Empire 2.
In terms of gameplay, Tropico 7 draws heavily from the legacy of the series.
During the game, we watch the action from a bird's eye view, and all issues related to the functioning of a tropical country encompassing a vast archipelago rest on our shoulders. In order for our dictatorship to last as long as possible, we must not only build, but also seek support from the citizens. This can be obtained by issuing edicts beneficial to them or on the contrary - by ruling with an iron hand and instilling terror.
The financial condition of the country and its inhabitants also plays an important role, as well as the necessity to deal with the opposition or to establish strategic alliances. Propaganda also remains a significant factor, carried out in the form of election speeches and "relocation" of monuments from various corners of the world or even through the appearance of El Presidente himself.
Compared to the previous parts of the Tropico series, the seventh part stands out due to a number of new features. The first of these is terraforming, thanks to which we can freely shape landscapes, creating hills and valleys or manipulating the course of rivers. In addition, the developers have enriched the gameplay with a new feature allowing El Presidente to face the faction leaders and negotiate or manipulate them in order to maintain power.
Additionally, a system of political affiliation awaits us, within which we issue edicts reflecting the style of how we rule. The tactical aspect is the completion of all this. The game allows us to take more direct control over units when circumstances force us to conduct military operations.
The heart of Tropico 7 is a story campaign in which we have to face our rival, Victoria Guera. In addition, there are individual scenarios and sandbox maps waiting to be checked here, as well as a random location generator.
