After releasing their hit game, Vampire Survivors, the poncle studio began working not only on expanding their creation but also on side projects set in its universe. The first of these is Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard from Vampire Survivors - a hybrid of a roguelite dungeon crawler and a card game.

Gameplay

In Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard from Vampire Survivors, the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). The adventure takes us through dungeons known from Vampire Survivors, which we explore as the heroes of this production. Although chaos sometimes reigns on the screen here as well, the gameplay is based on a completely different foundation.

Card battles

During the game, we engage in turn-based battles with opponents, playing cards according to increasing mana costs and activating combos. Since each subsequent play enhances the effect of the next card, we must compose a deck and develop a strategy to maximize its potential. Additionally, there are the titular Wildcards, which allow us to extend attack sequences.

Character development and deck building

As we progress, we gain experience and level up, as well as expand our deck. We also discover gems and enhancements hidden inside chests found along the way. Besides this, we can upgrade our weapons and summon survivors, gaining access to an increasingly wide range of effects.

Multi-level dungeons and base camp

The dungeons we visit have a multi-level structure, and the game allows us to dig through to subsequent floors. Between expeditions, we arrive at a village where we can prepare for further adventures.

AltChar: 7 / 10

Vampire Crawlers is a well-constructed dungeon looter with quite an engaging card combat system, let down by repetitiveness that arrives a little too soon and a complete absence of any story whatsoever.

DualShockers: 9 / 10 by Scott Baird

The gameplay loop is fun and addictive, rewarding experimentation and offering countless opportunities for different builds. Exploring dungeons has never been more fun, and I'm far more eager to see more Vampire Crawlers content than a sequel to Vampire Survivors.
