AM4 Socket Refuses to Die; Will Support AMD Ryzen 4000 CPU

The representative of XMG, a company producing laptops using AMD processors, informed that mobile units from the Ryzen 4000 line are compatible with the AM4 socket and B450 chipset. The same should be true for desktop models and computers based on the same platform.

The Ryzen 4000 will be compatible with the AM4 socket. But to what extent?

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Ryzen 4000 CPUs will be compatible with the B450 chipset and AM4 socket;
  2. The new CPUs should not have any problems working with other platforms, such as the X470, X570 or the future B550;
  3. The situation of older B350 and X370 motherboards is not yet clear.

It looks like the new AMD processors in the Ryzen 4000 line will be compatible with some motherboards with AM4 sockets. According to information disclosed on Reddit by a representative of XMG (one Schenker), the B450 chipset will work with at least some of these computing units.

"At any rate, it’s already been confirmed that AM4 socket and B450 chipset will be compatible with some (if not all) future Ryzen 4000 SKUs. As you might know from Desktop mainboards, the B450 chipset was not meant to be run with the 105W tier SKUs, but the 65W SKUs all run perfectly fine. We expect this to repeat with Ryzen 4000," we read.

The reports are based on the example of the XMG Apex 15 laptop and the B450 chipset, but everything seems to indicate that it will be similar in the case of the X470, X570 platforms (and the new B550, which should debut in June). Of course, users will most likely have to update their BIOS and software, but this is normal in such situations.

It is not known whether the Ryzen 4000 will be compatible with older B350 / X370 chipsets. It is worth remembering that already with the previous generation of AMD's CPU - Ryzen 3000 based on the Zen 2 architecture - there were some problems with this. It should also be noted that the above information does not come directly from AMD. Dr. Lisa Su will certainly reveal all the details later on.
