Amazon's The Lord of the Rings Will be Shot in New Zealand

The Lord of the Rings series from Amazon was announced to be shot in New Zealand. The same as all previous movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's books. Production is expected to start in a few months.

They have beautiful rocks in this New Zealand.
Amazon's The Lord of the Rings in a nutshell:
  • 5 seasons; first with 20 episodes
  • Time and place of action: Second Age, Middle Earth
  • Budget: 1 billion dollars.
  • Premiere: 2021
  • Platform: Amazon Prime

Amazon announced that the Lord of the Rings, a new and very expensive show created by the company, will be shot in Auckland, New Zealand. This seems to be the only right decision, as it was there that the previous adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, were shot. Photos will start in the coming months. The series, set in the Middle Earth, is supposed to differ in its plot from its film counterpart.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, showrunners and executive producers, so referred to the choice of location:

"As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff. And we’re happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings."

Over time, people involved in the show have been revealing various technical details the production. Just to remind you: the series, which will be set in the Second Age in Middle Earth, will consist of five seasons. The first one is to contain twenty episodes, the first of which will be directed by J.A. Bayonna. The production budget is round and record-breaking 1 billion dollars. The series is scheduled to be released in 2021 and will be available on the Amazon Prime platform.

Meanwhile, a post with the flag of New Zealand appeared on the official Twitter of the show:
