Ahoy! We are at our 3rd question in this week’s Cookie Jam event. It seems that developers have decided to follow the pirate theme this time. Thanks to that I have returned to my childhood (or early teens) when I was watching various TV dramas and playing video games about pirates and privateers (yes, there is a difference between those two). It is the most fun I have answering Buzzwords since I started the game! So, let’s answer the next one – “Common disease for pirates without fruit.”
Let’s be a little bit more precise than that “for pirates” part of the hint. It was the common disease for all seafarers without proper stock of fruits or something similar with longer expiration date. So, without further ado:
Scurvy is an awful disease which, if not treated, ends with a person’s death. It appears due to lack of vitamin C. While in modern times it is not so widely widespread, it used to take a deadly toll on all sailors (not only pirates) during the Age of Discovery (between the XV – XVII century). However, the disease was known since ancient times. For example, sailors in Ancient China took some ginger on board of their ships to prevent it. Of course, sailors were the most endangered group of people due to spending long months, sometimes even years, on the sea with restricted access to fruit and with a specific diet based on products with a long expiration date (so fruits in the “raw form” were not always accessible).
Now it is time to answer the next question. We are going to search for a treasure with “Spanish gold coins.” Good luck!
