Argylle Disappoints At The Box Office. The Spy Series Starring Henry Cavill May Be Over Before It Has Even Begun

The beginning of Argylle's journey in cinemas has been disappointing. The film isn’t as popular as its producents, who invested a lot of money in it, might have hoped.

Argylle is a spy movie starring Henry Cavill, which generated a lot of interest among viewers – especially because of British actor’s hairstyle and the theory that Taylor Swift was behind the project. Unfortunately, neither one made the film a success in cinemas. Failure was already foreshadowed by reviews – on Rotten Tomatoes only 35% of 213 reviews are positive. Audience reception seems to be better, but this still didn’t help the film's results.

Matthew Vaughn's spy comedy earned only $18 million in the United States in its opening weekend with a budget of $200 million. So it seems that the production may be a failure, one of the first this year. Of course, it may yet rebound, especially since audience reception is better than the critics’, but this is certainly not the kind of opening expected by the filmmakers, who invested heavily in the project and brought in the biggest stars.

But even though the earnings so far are not impressive, Argylle still ranked first at the box office for the weekend of February 2-4. In other countries film opened to an estimated $17.3 million, for global start of $35.3 million.

Because of current box office results, the future of Argylle doesn't look as positive as the filmmakers, who had planned to make a trilogy, had imagined. Vaughn wanted to make more films in this spy universe, but unless the movie suddenly rebounds and starts earning more, those plans could be in jeopardy.
