There is no doubt about the fact that Baldur's Gate 3 is a successful game in many respects. The title has won many important awards, including twice the title of game of the year. The success is evidenced by many factors: an engaging storyline, a huge number of choices, well-designed gameplay, but also the soundtrack.

"Renaissance" of game music

The composer of the music for Baldur's Gate 3, Borislav Slavov, mentioned on X that the recent time associated with the huge hype for the game was truely "crazy" for him. In doing so, he made an interesting comment on the popularity of video game soundtracks:

"A nice message from a colleague who is a game music composer made me realize something - we are witnessing a true renaissance of video game music. More than ever it is being recognized as an art in itself."

It's hard not to agree with Slavov. This period of "renaissance" he mentioned is a time when game soundtracks are recognized not only by gamers - let's mention, for example, the popularity of very distinctive tracks from The Witcher, Grand Theft Auto or Megalovania from Undertale. Such music is already treated on a par with hits played on the radio or compositions by world-famous artists.

The popularity of concerts

Slavov points out that the work of video game soundtrack composers is extremely inspiring, and he himself feels proud to be part of this community. In addition, he mentions another very important point:

"[Tickets for - ed. note:] symphony concerts are sold out within days. The music from the games we love is part of our daily lives."

You've probably heard of these types of concerts, which, by the way, are quite popular in many countries. Very often, game developers also decide to organize concert tours around the world following the example of popular music bands.

Early next year, for example, there will be an event called the Festival of Sesons, during which it will be possible to listen to the well-known songs from Stardew Valley. Most of the tickets for this event have already sold out.

Organizers of various types of events have been paying more and more attention to game music in recent years. In addition to shorter performances by orchestras (like the one at the The Game Awards 2023 gala) the composers themselves are being invited to events (Borislav Slavov was present at Polish Pyrkon).

It is also worth mentioning that last year video games received a separate category at the Grammy Awards, a prestigious music gala. According to Slavov, this "trend" for game soundtracks will soon move to the West End and Broadway stages. Let's just hope the titles of the games themselves are no longermispronounced in such places.
