Video game heartbreak can feel real, especially in a deeply immersive RPG like Baldur's Gate 3. One of the fan-favorite companions learned that the hard way.
Today, a Baldur’s Gate 3 player shared a hilarious screenshot on the subreddit. It’s on par with an incredible screenshot of a player flirting with a companion while using a Kuo Toa mod. Today’s post started as a joke, and many other users were quick to add to the humor; however, it also shed some light on how the game’s romance system works. The context began when the original poster claimed “Astarion dumped me…” and then took some drastic action.
According to the title of the Reddit post, “Astarion dumped me so I stabbed him…” resulting in this ridiculous screenshot of Astarion lying face down at camp, arms and legs spread like a starfish. It doesn’t even seem like the player is doing a Dark Urge run. But players were quick to jump on the humor of the situation, with the top comment reading: “Good thing you didn’t overreact.” But my personal favorite comes from user Kseplion, who commented: “Hell hath no fury like a videogame protagonist scorned,” which feels very true across most video games, not just in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Other users were more understanding, though, with some players sympathizing with the feeling. “On a [Dark Urge] run once, Wyll dumped me so I decided nothing was worth living, gave my soul and body over to Father, and handed him the Netherbrain to spite my ex-boyfriend.” Adding at the end, “We’ve all been there.” Another user replied, “Who hasn’t committed omnicide over a broken heart?” If anyone would be understanding of this original poster’s plight, it’s the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit.
But it wasn’t all fun and games. Some users were curious about how the player reached this point of no return. They explained, “Apparently, there’s some specific order of events that needs to happen in act 2 that I didn’t do, so I didn’t get one of the heartfelt cutscenes.” But other players were quick to point out that “you don’t need to follow a specific order to stay in a relationship, it’s only to get one of the versions of his romance scene.” But it didn’t seem like the player was too open to backtracking. Something about users on Reddit explaining how romance works, even in a video game, probably isn’t great.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of so many branching narrative paths that it’s easy to feel like you might have missed out on something. Sometimes you do, like a rare line of dialogue, a spellcasting sheep, or even a detail of the character creator you somehow missed. But that’s also what makes the game so replayable. Thousands of people are still playing and discussing this game nearly two years after its release because no two playthroughs are the same. This can cause anxiety, but it also makes your individual playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 unique, which is not often found in modern video games.
