This Baldur's Gate 3 character creator option is easy to miss, but once you find it you'll never go back

Baldur's Gate 3 has arguably one of the best character creators. However, there might be an incredibly stylish option that has flown under your radar.

One of the most unusual character options in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Dragonborn. Unlike every other character option, Dragonborn are reptilian, covered in colorful scales, and can use their breath as a unique elemental attack. There are ten total options for Dragonborn, five metallic and five chromatic options, which each correspond to a different elemental breath weapon and a handful of suggested scale colors. However, as one player pointed out on Reddit, it’s easy to overlook the fact that there are no limitations to scale color, and you can take it even further.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Dragonborn are not limited to the suggested scale colors, as one user finally discovered

The option is, unfortunately, very easy to miss when in the character creator. When you choose a Bronze Dragonborn, for example, the character creator provides a limited selection of Bronze and Bronze-adjacent colors to choose from. But just above those options, practically blending in with the background, is a small check box that reads “All Skin Colours.” This seems obvious, but not everyone notices it, as this Reddit user explained: “I went through the ENTIRE game not realizing you aren’t limited to Dragonborn scale colors that are associated with your ancestry. There is a button in [the] character creator, but my eyes somehow ignored its existence entirely.” If this player missed it, chances are plenty of other players missed it too.

Baldur’s Gate 3 already outshines most games with its level of character options, branching story paths, and hidden secrets. Especially on your first time playing, it’s easy to miss things. There is an extremely rare interaction with Minthara, a character most players don’t even realize can be a companion in their first run. And speaking of odd companions, there’s a spellcasting sheep that most players will miss recruiting. One player never even realized Wyll was a recruitable character during their first playthrough. So, when it comes to Baldur’s Gate 3, missing something is just part of the experience.

But now that you know, you can fully take advantage of the plethora of scale color options available with your dragonborn characters, just like this commenter, who said, “Once I realized this in my first playthrough, I immediately made my black dragonborn hot pink…” Other users were also quick to point out that this applies to all other playable races as well. You can even use Dragonborn eyes with other races, though, as one user sadly points out, “you don’t get the cool fire effect though…” unless you are creating a tiefling.

If you want to take the color options to a whole new level, you can also make your character a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer. As part of this subclass, the player can choose how to represent the draconic ancestry on their character’s body. This can give an Elf or Human dragon scales, but if you’re already a Dragonborn, it can add an amazing secondary scale color, resulting in some stunning character designs.

Even if you’re not playing as a Dragonborn, but still pick the Draconic Bloodline subclass, you can change the scale color to anything you want. Players shared their creations, with one player using purple scales on the face of their Drow Sorcerer, and another adding Bronze scales to their Sorcerer’s cheeks as “highlighter.” Hopefully, this is helpful for your next Baldur’s Gate 3 Dragonborn character. Or maybe inspires you to play as a Dragonborn for the first time.
