Battle.net will be no more – Blizzard is renaming their key online service

Battle.net has been with us for years. Now, however, the online service is going to lose its separate identity and be rebranded using the Blizzard name.

Blizzard Entertainment has surprised their long-standing fans with a decision to ditch the Battle.net name, the reasons for which were explained here. Rest assured though, Battle.net technology will still be functioning as a main hub for World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, and other games from that publisher, but will be rebranded using the Blizzard name instead. There is still no set date for the transition. So we guess Battle.net will give way to Blizzard.net, which is not so terrible unless you are very sentimental and hate any changes. In that case, it’s a tragedy, and we offer our deep, sincere condolences.

But seriously, Blizzard created Battle.net as a separate online-gaming service back in the times when multiplayer wasn’t such an obvious thing as it is now. It was at its core a novel and distinct concept, so no wonder it earned its own name. Nowadays, however, when almost every game has built-in online features, there is no need for two separate identities: Blizzard and Battle.net. Quite the contrary, Blizzard noted that this schism has been causing occasional confusion, so there you have it. Something ends, something begins, right?
