Censored Edition of Devotion was Scheduled to Hit GOG.com; It Won't

Taiwanese horror game Devotion was about to return to the West with GOG.com. At least that's what the devs at Red Candle Games claimed, because a few hours later the Polish store resigned from offering the game that sparked fury among Chinese players last year.

Developers from the Taiwanese studio Red Candle Games have no luck. Almost two years ago, their work disappeared from Steam on charges of defamation of the President of China, some of which, as some people still claim, can be regarded as far fetched. This was to change soon, as Devotion's debut on another digital distribution platform was announced today. However, the joy was short. A few hours later, GOG.com informed that it resigned from adding Red Candle Games' title to its catalogue "under pressure from players".

The Polish platform did not provide detailed reasoning behind its decision, and until the moment of writing this text, Red Candle Games employees did not comment on it either. Whatever the reasons, the whole situation arouses a certain disgust. The decision to offer Devotion on GOG.com was certainly not made overnight and CD Projekt's sudden withdrawal from the arrangements rather did not delight the creators. Neither the players were happy with it, who expressed their dissatisfaction on Twitter, some of whom suggested releasing the game on itch.io or a similar platform. Time will tell whether this will happen or whether Devotion will remain practically unavailable outside Taiwan (where a limited boxed edition was released).
