12 Years Ago Gabe Newell was Asked About CS2 and He Did Not Lie

Some fans waiting for CS2, thirsty for facts and trivia, unearthed an interesting interview. Gabe Newell, asked during IEM 2011 about CS2, already revealed Valve's release plan for the coming years.

Counter-Strike 2 has been keeping fans up at night. Some of them, after watching the official trailer of the game, scour the Internet in search of interesting facts or hidden info. One of them is an old 12-year-old video with Gabe Newell, who has already outlined Valve's release plans. As it turns out, Gaben wasn't lying.

Gaben knew and said it

The excerpt with Gabe's statement was published in 2011 on YouTube (you can find the full report here).

  • The footage comes from the IEM 2011 esports event, and the interview was conducted between Mooly Eden (vice president of Intel, the tournament's sponsor) and Gabe Newell.
  • It was a period of high hopes for shooter fans - the outdated CS 1.6, and players awaited the first announcements of a worthy sequel (incidentally announced a few months later under the name CSGO).

You can see the translated footage below.

Mooly: Before we end the interview. Someone told me about "God" Gabe - can you ask him one question. I think a lot of people would like to hear when you will release Counter-Strike 2...

Gabe: First we will deliver Portal 2, then Dota 2, and only later will we worry about numbers or the game ...

Mooly: Are we going to see it, or not?

Gabe: I can't say anything more....

Mooly: Okay, thank you very much Gabe.

Counter-Strike 2, or 12 years of waiting

Portal 2 debuted in 2011, while Dota 2 was released two years later. Given Gabe's statement, who talks about Valve's chronology in releasing games and mentions CS with a number, it can be said with a high degree of confidence that he was just talking about the recently announced CS2 (and not CSGO from 2012).

Counter-Strike 2 launch exclusively on PC in the summer of 2023. The title will take the form of a free update for CSGO, which will transfer the game to the Source 2 engine and introduce many improvements, including visual.
