Today, with the launch of Destiny 2 ’s The Edge of Fate expansion, some players are shocked at the size of the download. There are various reports online about size, but according to the mods on Steam, across all platforms and storefronts, players will need a minimum of 138 gigabytes on top of what is already installed. No matter what, it seems like this expansion for Destiny 2 will require some significant disk space and time to download, to the point that at least one player is giving up on the game.

Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate file size is enough to cause a player to drop the game completely

The Edge of Fate expansion is the first in the recently revealed two-year roadmap from Destiny 2 developer Bungie, called Frontiers. The next expansion for Frontiers, Ash & Iron, will launch on September 9th. The next major expansion, Renegades, which will include Star Wars-themed content, launches on December 2nd. This is a shift from Destiny 2’s usual expansion strategy, shifting to two smaller expansions per year rather than one major expansion.

There are many people across Destiny 2 social channels sharing their surprise at how enormous the download is. But one user shared a Steam discussion post explaining how their experience is causing them to abandon the game entirely. The post sets the scene: “So I was updating the game and was wondering why it was taking so long. Went to look at the discussions and saw from the 2nd pinned discussion that it says that Steam needs a total of 331.40gb after install. Yeah I don’t think so.” This number includes the base files of Destiny 2 as well, so it's only, roughly, an additional 148gb with the new expansion, not an additional 300.

The user continues, “I have to uninstall it due to lack of space. And no, I’m not going to delete/uninstall other stuff or buy a new hdd/ssd for Destiny 2.” Signing off with a final, “It’s been a good run the many years I’ve played, but as Q once said, all good things must come to an end…” Regardless of the dramatics here, clearly this enormous file size is causing problems for Destiny 2 players. At the very least, it’s causing some players to uninstall other games just to make space. It’s a shame for any game to lose players just because of its file size, and with Bungie’s recently revealed two-year roadmap, this isn’t even the last update players will have to keep up with this year.

Some other users argue in the comments that this download is only for the actual download period and will compress once the download is complete. But even needing an extra 130, 140, or more gigabytes for a download on top of the base Destiny 2, can be exclusionary. On a PC or console, huge file sizes like this can limit players to a handful of large games at a time. Plus, not everyone has great internet access, so a download of this size can take a long time depending on the individual’s situation.

On the other hand, this is not much different from previous major expansions. The Final Shape, for example, was 150 gigabytes to download. This is also just one player dropping the game. On Steam, Destiny 2 has jumped up in player count, becoming Steam’s ninth most played game at the time of writing, according to SteamDB, so clearly this was not an issue for thousands of other players. Destiny 2 has been around for many years, and it likely still has a few to go, especially if new updates keep coming out this regularly.
