Development of Console Version of Elite Dangerous Halted

Frontier Developments has canceled the console versions of the Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey DLC and announced that the game will be developed exclusively for PC.

We have bad news for console-owning fans of Elite: Dangerous. It turns out that development of the game will continue exclusively on PC.

The end of console development of Elite: Dangerous - basic information

Frontier Developments informed that development of the console versions of Elite: Dangerous has been canceled.

  1. The decision also means canceling of the console versions of the Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey DLC.
  2. Support for console releases will continue - they will still receive patches to fix bugs, but will not get new content.

The developers realize that the decision will not be well received by console gamers, but they believe it is the best possible one for the future of the brand.

The developers acknowledge that the release of Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey on PC was not a successful one (read more about it here). The project debuted in such a terrible condition that the developers had to focus exclusively on fixing it.

Initially, it was decided to only suspend work on the console versions, but in the end it was decided that the only way to develop the brand smoothly is to focus fully on the PC edition.

This decision is disappointing from the point of view of console gamers, but it seems that the devs have realistically assessed their options. Since the May release of Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey they managed to remove a lot of problems, but the ideal is still far away. The developers have a lot of work ahead of them before the add-on reaches an acceptable level.
