Today, Paradox Interactive released a trailer for Europa Universalis V, a historical grand strategy game. The brief trailer does not feature any gameplay, and we do not have a release date yet, but if you want more from the team, they did host a thirty-minute announcement show on YouTube. The video features conversations with multiple developers discussing the new features of the game and the process of making it.

Paradox Interactive reveals the true name of Project Caesar, Europa Universalis V

The Europa Universalis series is based on a French board game of the same name from 1993. The first game was launched in Germany and Sweden in 2000 and elsewhere at various points in 2001. By 2013, there had been three sequels, plus Europa Universalis: Rome, which was released in 2008. So, in nearly the time it took Paradox to release all five games in the series, fans have been waiting for the next entry. There have been twelve years between today’s announcement and the release of Europa Universalis IV. Thankfully, the most recent game has received plenty of post-launch support, with the latest expansion from last year receiving positive feedback from fans.

Simultaneously, at the time of the livestream announcement, content creators and sites shared their experiences with a preview of the game. Some claim to have played for hundreds of hours. This could be a good sign that fans will not have to wait too long to try the game themselves. Until today, Europa Universalis V was known by the code name Project Caesar, so today’s announcement is a major revelation for fans of the series. When I first saw the trailer, especially without any gameplay, I was worried the release might still be a few years away. But if there is already enough of a build for a preview, it might not be that far out.

From the Europa Universalis V Steam page, “Europa Universalis V builds on the franchise’s core concept of developing and advancing nations from around a deeply researched historical world, adding more detailed diplomacy, a more sophisticated economic model, a revised military system and greater logistical depth that will challenge even the most experienced strategy gamers.” Pick a country and experience five hundred years of history unfolding around you. Decide how you will rule, as a conqueror, a diplomat, or something else entirely.

About one year ago, fans were excited to see a map for Project Caesar, which we know now is actually Europa Universalis V. If the reception to that map was positive one year ago, hopefully Paradox has only had more time to make this the best grand strategy game it can be. Europa Universalis V is available to wishlist now on Steam.
