Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link has been canceled, and fans are not too upset. The team's focus will shift to Kingdom Hearts IV.
This might be tough for fans of the Kingdom Hearts series to hear. But it sounds like Square Enix made the right call in cancelling Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. For those who haven’t been following, Missing-Link was in development for six years since 2019, but was only announced in 2022. It was planned to be a “GPS-based action RPG” for mobile platforms, following in the footsteps of games like Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom, but it would probably have played more like Monster Hunter Now. Unfortunately, Square Enix announced its cancellation today, but it sounds like it was for good reasons.
The Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link team shared a statement today on social media. After apologizing for the disappointing announcement, the team explained, “…we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time…” The post also goes on to thank all the players who participated in the multiple closed beta tests, the results of which must have played a role in making this decision.
As an attempt to make amends with Kingdom Hearts fans, the post added that “The Kingdom Hearts series will continue. We are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts IV, and hope you’ll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for future updates.” The next major entry in the beloved series was also announced in 2022, but this is the most significant update fans have received from Square Enix since then.
Ultimately, while it’s always disappointing to have a game canceled, it doesn’t sound like fans are missing out on something fun with Missing-Link. The statement from Square Enix does not share that any developers were laid off or studios were closed during this cancellation, which would make this something to worry about. But from what has been said so far, it sounds like the team will be shifting focus instead to Kingdom Hearts IV, which every Kingdom Hearts fan can surely be happy about.
In the replies, fans are generally receptive to the news. One user wrote, “This was the best case scenario…” and another added, “Unfortunate the wasted time, but appreciate the honesty of realizing aye, it didn’t work, we move on.” Some fans are mixed on the lore and story that was expected to be part of Missing-Link. Some wonder if it will now be included in Kingdom Hearts IV or if it will be missing entirely. For now, we will have to wait to hear more from Square Enix about their future plans. Summer Game Fest is right around the corner. Could this be the year the highly anticipated next entry makes its second appearance with a new trailer?
