Today, PlayStation hosted a deep dive gameplay presentation for Sucker Punch’s upcoming Ghost of Yotei. The State of Play showcase lasted about twenty minutes and broke down much of what players can expect from this sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. From the footage shown, Ghost of Yotei looks like a stunning open-world action adventure that could easily end up on many people’s game of the year lists in December. Ghost of Yotei’s launch is only a few months away, arriving exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2nd.

Ghost of Yotei deep dive gameplay presentation showcases cinematic modes and customization

Ghost of Yotei puts a major emphasis on its cinematic style. Players will have several visual modes to choose from, which will impact the game's appearance. Play in black and white with the “Kurosawa mode,” inspired by filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. For more zoomed-in, intimate action scenes, try the “Miike mode,” inspired by Takashi Miike, the director of 13 Assassins. Plus, for fans of anime like Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, try out the “Watanabe mode” for lo-fi-inspired beats to replace the game’s usual music.

This deep dive also explored a new clue system. Choose which topics to ask enemies about, and this will lead you down various gameplay paths. Ask about the Oni and you’ll encounter scorched ruins and samurai. Alternatively, ask about the Kitsune, and your path might take you to a snow-covered field where ninjas will use illusions and ambushes to take you down. It will be interesting to learn more about how this system works, as it also appears to have an impact on which abilities become available to Atsu.

Today’s presentation also revealed Atsu’s array of weapon choices. There’s the classic katana, the spear, the chained tsurigama, the massive odachi, or dual swords. Atsu will also have access to ranged weapons, including various bows and even a few guns. The gameplay revealed that certain weapons are more effective against specific enemies. The long sword, or odachi, is best for larger enemies. Meanwhile, the dual swords are a good counter to enemies wielding spears.

Ghost of Yotei appears to be a beautiful game, offering numerous ways to customize your experience. From the cinematic options, the gameplay itself, and the cosmetics. The showcase revealed that players will be able to customize their outfits, right down to the color. Near the end of the twenty-minute showcase, two limited edition Ghost of Yotei-themed PlayStation 5 consoles and controllers were also revealed.

While this may be one of the few PlayStation Studios games released this year, it could be shaping up to be something truly special. It makes sense, given how great Ghost of Tsushima was in 2020. Ultimately, we will have to wait until October 2nd to get our hands on the game. Hopefully, Sucker Punch has only improved on their first entry in the series.
