Kratos Learns New Tricks; Combat in GoW Ragnarok Hides Many Surprises

God of War Ragnarok will offer players quite a few innovations in the combat system. As a result, battles are expected to be even more satisfying.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Developers of God of War: Ragnarok have shared more information about the game.
  • The title's combat system is expected to offer many novelties.
  • Each weapon in the game will provide a special attack depending on its type.

The release of God of War: Ragnarok is fast approaching, so the developers are slowly starting to reveal more information about the game. This time they elaborated on the revamped combat system, which is expected to be even more satisfying than before.

If not with an axe, then with a shield

Secrets of combat in GoW: Ragnarok were revealed to a Game Informer journalist. He had the opportunity to watch a gameplay footage showcasing the new mechanics and interviewed the developers. One of them, Mihir Sheth, explained the assumptions that guided them in designing the game.

"We tried to create systems you want to engage with that are fun, very playful, lots of different routes. And when we looked at the combat in the last game, we were like, ‘We can push this further; we can find new toys and ways of playing with enemies and strategies.’ That’s been the guiding principle more than anything else. That was our guiding thought."

And how does it translate into reality? Among other things, the developers provided an example of the new moves we will be able to use in combat. Each weapon is to be assigned a special attack specific to that type of weapon. Kratos will be able, for example, to imbue his blade with fire or ice, which will increase the damage.

Shields have also been affected by the changes. Depending on the type, their use will be dramatically different. The Dauntless Shield will allow for dynamic defense and counterattacks using the shield itself.

The Stonewall Shield, on the other hand, is a powerful shield that accumulates kinetic energy from enemy strikes. After time, we will be able to release it, hitting the ground and causing devastating shockwaves.

These are just a few examples, of course, but there are to be quite a few similar special moves and attacks in the game. In turn, all this will translate into even more engaging clashes, where surprises will await even veterans of the series.

Gameplay coming soon

We will learn more about this in the near future. This is because Game Informer has in store 4-minute footage from the game, which it intends to share soon.

How all this will work out in reality, we will find out later this year. God of War: Ragnarok will launch on November 9 for PS5 and PS4.
