The follow up to God of War from 2018 is coming. As announced, today the critics started publishing reviews - and they agree on the ratings. God of War: Ragnarok is a good candidate for game of the year.
The latest GoW is praised primarily for its skillful development of mechanics from the previous installment - mainly the combat system. It is also a more developed title in terms of the number of puzzles or enemies and their types. The well-written storyline, on the other hand, is, according to some, a great finale to both GoW games of the so-called Norse saga.
God of War: Ragnarok currently has an average rating of 94% on Metacritic (for the PS5 version). Below are excerpts from selected reviews.
God of War Ragnarok is an masterclass example of when to not mess with perfection. Going into this sequel, Santa Monica Studios knew what to work on to truly recapture the magic that made the previous installment so amazing but also add in just enough upgrades to keep the experience fresh and exciting." - GamePressure, 9.5/10.
God of War: Ragnarok is a triumph. It’s a swansong for the PS4 and one of the best first-party games for the PS5 so far. It’s bigger than its predecessor in every way." - Game Revolution, 9/10.
"God of War: Ragnarok is an almighty achievement and creates a new high that makes many of its peers look mortal by comparison." - IGN, 10/10.
God of War: Ragnarok is a beautiful, moving game, no longer purely centered on a father getting to know his son, but also about vengeance, forgiveness and attempting to change both prophecy, and the people we used to be, both of which prove to be equally difficult." - Forbes, 9.5/10.
Here are selected critics' ratings:
