The latest game from Kojima Productions, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, has already earned itself a spot among the best games of the year so far. But that doesn’t mean it’s lacking any of that trademark weirdness from visionary game director Hideo Kojima. Players have been finding all kinds of easter eggs sprinkled throughout the game world, but one player found something quite memorable.

Hideo Kojima appears as a constellation in Death Stranding 2, peering down at you as you take a bath

It’s not unusual for Kojima to place himself in his games. He’s appeared in several Metal Gear Solid games as a recruitable character and had a strange appearance in the first Death Stranding during a brief nightmare. The Death Stranding 2 cameo is subtle, not scary, but maybe creepy. The moment was shared by GermanStrands on social media. Apparently, if you visit the hot spring near Heartman’s lab and take a dip, you can see a startling constellation in the sky, peering down at you.

GermanStrands writes in their post accompanying the gameplay clip, “Took a bath in Death Stranding 2, looked up at the sky and saw Hideo Kojima. LMAO pls never change.” If it had been anyone else staring down at the player during a vulnerable moment, maybe it would truly come off as creepy. But Hideo Kojima has worked hard to establish himself as an icon, and someone players would be more than happy to see in this context. Uniqueness like this stands out in a gaming landscape that is all too often cluttered with run-of-the-mill sequels and brand-safe ideas.

In the comments, fans rallied around their love of Death Stranding 2 and Kojima’s odd choices. One player shared a screenshot where another hot spring constellation appears to be of the Kojima Productions logo. Several players shared an experience where they were offered the opportunity to put a bucket on their head while in a hot spring, and by doing so, they were teleported to a different location. A few players chalked it up to Kojima “trolling them,” which in any other context might be seen as annoying or frustrating, but not here.

The odd charm of Death Stranding 2 is hard to ignore, even if you haven’t played it yet. It currently sits at the fourth highest-rated game of the year on Metacritic, only just behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince, and Split Fiction. It would not be surprising to see this game walk away with a handful of game awards at the end of the year.
