We have some really hard Buzzwords this weekend in Cookie Jam. Just when I thought I’d nailed tricky ones like “California orange stone fruit,” “round Chinese festive pastries,” and “grain-like pasta from North Africa”, along came “painful when ingested.” And it didn’t get any easier with “crocus spice.” Now “Winter olympic sport in 1998” had me stuck for a bit, but I finally figured it out.
I’m not really into sports and I don’t think I’ve ever watched a full Olympic broadcast, but thanks to my good old friend, the Internet, I managed to figure it out and get the right answer. So, here it is:
There are 16 sports featured in the Winter Olympics, but the one we were after was snowboarding. It made its Olympic debut back in 1998 at the Nagano Games in Japan. The inclusion of snowboarding was a strategic move by the Olympic Committee to attract a younger, more diverse audience and bring some fresh energy to the Winter Games. It wasn’t just about adding a new sport – it was about shaking up the traditional lineup and appealing to a new generation of winter sports fans.
At first, it only included Giant Slalom and Halfpipe (where riders do tricks on a halfpipe ramp), but since then, snowboarding has grown a lot. They’ve added events like Slopestyle (tricks on a course with jumps and rails), Snowboard Cross (head-to-head racing down a course with obstacles), and Big Air (jumping off a huge ramp to perform tricks). Snowboarding really shook up the traditional winter sports lineup and is still one of the most popular and exciting events at the Winter Games.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
