Jhiro has once again proven himself to be the most ambitious mod remaking the Yakuza series. His latest creation is the Intertwined Fates modification, which adds a full cooperative mode to Yakuza 5 Remastered.
The Yakuza series isn’t particularly mod-friendly. That hasn’t stopped players, however, from creating a number of interesting modifications. Still, none of them seem as impressive as the Intertwined Fates mod, released just a few days ago.
This project adds a co-op mode to Yakuza 5 Remastered. It’s fully functional – you can play through the entire story campaign in co-op. When using the mod, one player controls the characters from Yakuza 5, while the second player takes on the role of Ichiban, the protagonist who debuted in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The mod is designed for two players, but if you prefer, you can play solo, in which case Ichiban is controlled by AI.
The whole thing is meant for local multiplayer, but by using applications like Parsec or RemotePlayWhatever, it’s also possible to play online.
The mod is particularly impressive in terms of execution. It’s not just a simple matter of adding a second character (which, in itself, would already be remarkable for a game that has no multiplayer mode). The creator has thoroughly reworked Yakuza 5, making it feel as if the game had been designed for co-op from the ground up.
As a result, you get not only two-player combat, but also cooperative dance battles and hunting missions. All cutscenes have been reworked to include Ichiban’s presence. This character even comes with a unique set of attacks, though Intertwined Fates is also compatible with mods that alter fighting styles – so if you want, you can give him a different combat style.
All in all, the mod is extremely impressive and makes you hope that Sega might consider adding official co-op to the series in the future. Alternatively, we can keep our fingers crossed that the mod’s creator, Jhrino, will develop similar projects for other Yakuza titles – which is likely, given that he’s already testing co-op modes for Yakuza 0 & Kiwami, and Kiwami 2.
This isn’t Jhrino’s first impressive mod
Jhrino has already made a name for himself within the Yakuza fan community as an exceptionally ambitious modder. He previously created Like a Brawler for Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Brawler 8 for Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. These two projects completely overhaul the combat system, replacing the turn-based RPG battles with real-time brawler-style combat reminiscent of earlier entries in the series.
