Is this what the future looks like?

Say “konnichiwa” to the new Assassin’s Creed installment! We’re already done roaming through the hot sands of Egypt in Assassin’s Creed Origins. We’re yet to explore the tropical islands of Greece in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. And hopefully this time next year, we’ll have done sneaking around the rice fields of feudal Japan. Now, why should you think that Assassin’s Creed is getting all oriental?

Because Assassin’s Creed III suggests it

In the beginning were three symbols. A reddit user found three signs in the opening of Assassin’s Creed III. Take a closer look at them:

You can clearly see the Horus Eye, a hieroglyph referencing Assassin’s Creed Origins. Then there comes the Greek letter Omega, and Greece is obviously the setting of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. But what about the third little guy? It represents the “gate to heaven,” or a Torii gate, or more precisely – a traditional Japanese shrine entrance first mentioned in 922. As of 1185 – that’s when feudal Japan came around – Tori gates were not a rarity.

Because fans are dying for it

A “Japanese Assassin’s Creed” would be the first major installment to step out of the Western civilization – and fans would love that. Ubisoft already had one small shot at the Far East with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, but that was just a 2.5D spin-off. With the series stepping into the Orient for real, the developers would most likely see a big payoff.

Feudal Japan is also a theme overshining all the others in 2019. With the release of Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro: Shadows The Twice and Nioh 2, it would make sense for Ubisoft to follow this trend. The hype, at least, would be huge.

China already looked nice and cozy in Assassin’s Creed Chronicles.

Because it’s so… unbelievable

Still, there are a few reasons not to get too excited. First of all, the Japanese setting has already been referenced countless times. There were also at least a few cryptic messages suggesting the setting’s presence in another game from the series – and none of them turned out true. Perhaps this time around things will be different, but until then – sit tight, keep your fingers crossed, wish for the best and hold your horses. You’ll need them in Odyssey.
