Sony Said to Force Developers of Expensive Games to Make Demos for PS Plus

Sony wants to expand the trial version department of PlayStation games. According to recent rumors, publishers of more expensive titles will have to offer their demos to PS Plus Premium subscribers.

Sony plans to expand the segment of game demos released on PlayStation consoles. According to unofficial information, games that meet certain requirements will have to offer a demo for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

These revelations reached journalists from Game Developer (formerly Gamasutra). Citing anonymous sources, they revealed that games costing more than 33 Euros will have to have free trial versions, longer than two hours.. Publication of such a demo should take place no more than three months after the release of the game.

However, this rule is not to work retroactively and include already released titles. In addition, it will not apply to VR games.

The new rules will not affect the existing options of game advertisement. This means that also smaller developers can publish demos on their own initiative, nothing will also stand in the way of organizing so-called free weekends.

If such a policy comes into force, it will hit mainly the big publishers, who create high-budget titles. Of course, keep in mind that these are just rumors and only time will tell if they are true.

PlayStation Plus will soon be expanded significantly. In June three new subscription tiers will come into:

  1. PlayStation Plus Essential is the well-known version of the subscription currently in force;
  2. PlayStation Plus Extra will offer the same as the previous threshold, plus access to a catalog of about 400 games;
  3. PlayStation Plus Premium will give us access to 340 older games as part of backward compatibility, in addition to the benefits of the cheaper versions of the service.
